Ambrose
A game played where all players take a tee shot, the most favorable ball position is chosen and then all players take a shot from this new position and so on. The angle of which the head of the club makes contact with the ball. This affects the amount in which the ball will travel and spin.
Approach shot
A shot from the fairway with intent for the ball to land on the green.
Apron
The grass surrounding the outer perimeter of the green, which separates the green from the outer laying fairway and/or rough. Also referred to as frog hair or fringe.
Artisan
A limited membership status at a golf club with restricted rights for a reduced cost. In the past, British golf clubs included small artisan sections, to allow the working class to play on their courses. Generally, artisan members had restricted playing rights, were not allowed to enter the clubhouse, did not have a say when it came to the management of the club, participated in competitions and tournaments separate from those with full memberships and were required to do maintenance of the course, unpaid. Typically, artisan clubs are separate organizations that negotiate with private clubs to allow them to use the course, for exchange of maintenance. To this day there are still several artisan organizations throughout the world.
Attend (the flagstick)
The act of holding and removing the flagstick during play, for another player.
Away
The player whose ball is farthest from the hole is called the away ball/player. This player plays first.
Austin
A ball which does not land on the green but does land within an imaginary line passing through the flagstick.
Back nine
The last nine holes of an 18 hole golf course. Playing the back nine is called "heading in".
Backspin
A reverse spin inevitably placed on any ball that becomes airborne. The spin causes the ball to climb and land softly on the green.
Backswing
When you approach the ball to strike the ball, the backward part of the swing; from the ground to the highest point of the swing (behind the head), before the club begins its downward path toward the ball.
